Serious Black.

Earlier this week, the often hilarious Pitchfork ran this delightful review of the Black Kids' album, Partie Traumatic. The spirit of Oscar Wilde lives on. Of course, aside from the laziness of the gag, the opinion of the reviewer is also faulty (Yes, everyone is entitled to opinions, but that doesn't make a great many of them wrong). I've found Partie Traumatic to be a delightful romp across the ramparts of a supersized bouncy castle, all deft hooks and shoutalong choruses. Seriously, I don't know what more you could want from a summertime indie-pop album.

Unless you want something a little darker, the sort of fuzzy electro-disco to soundtrack muggy nights in the city, breathing spirits and smoke on the dancefloor. Then it's Black Ghosts you want. Their eponymous debut album is a layered, sophisticated pop record, stacking glossy arrangements and honeyed vocals on top of crunchy, thudding beats. Definitely high on the list of essential albums of 2008.
